WASHINGTON, D.C., October 11, 2023 – In a bid to combat rising traffic fatalities in the District of Columbia, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) conducted a high-visibility Traffic Safety Compliance Checkpoint on the 4700 block of South Capitol Street, Southwest, last night. This initiative is a part of the department’s continued focus on traffic enforcement and education citywide.

Aside from monitoring traffic safety, the main objectives of the checkpoint included promoting safe driving habits, educating drivers on traffic rules, ensuring traffic violation enforcement, and identifying and removing suspected impaired or unsafe drivers from the road.

During the course of this operation on Tuesday, October 10, officers issued 91 Notice of Infraction warnings and tickets. Additionally, there was one arrest made for driving without a permit. As a part of the community outreach, two child safety seats were also installed by the MPD.

The city’s Vision Zero initiative aims to eliminate all fatal and serious injury crashes. “MPD wants drivers to stay safe while on the roads and address drivers who put others at risk,” emphasized a representative from the department.

To bolster these efforts, the Metropolitan Police Department has underscored its commitment by collaborating with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the District Department of Transportation, and the US Department of Transportation. Together, they aim to enhance roadway safety for the entire community.
