BUFFALO, N.Y., — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers stationed at the Peace Bridge Port of Entry Cargo Facility recently took action to protect consumers by seizing a shipment of hair dryers on behalf of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). These hair dryers failed to meet essential safety standards, posing potential hazards to users.

The seizure occurred after CPSC determined that the hair dryers in question did not provide the necessary integral immersion protection, a requirement outlined in the Standard for Safety for Household Electric Personal Grooming Appliances. Consequently, CPSC classified these items as a substantial product hazard under the Consumer Product Safety Act.

In total, CBP officers seized 65 hair dryers, with a combined manufacturer’s suggested retail price of approximately $19,500. This proactive enforcement serves a twofold purpose, targeting both counterfeit goods and those with safety violations.

Buffalo Port Director Gaetano Cordone emphasized CBP’s commitment to protecting consumers, stating, “Part of our CBP mission includes protecting consumers from both counterfeit goods and goods with safety violations.” He further noted the significance of collaboration with federal agency partners like CPSC, which enables the prevention of potentially dangerous products from reaching consumers. These safety concerns encompass risks such as electrocution or fire, underscoring the importance of maintaining strict safety standards for household appliances.
