Cumberland Man Charged After Pointing Rifle At Woman During Domestic Dispute

CUMBERLAND, MD – A 36-year-old man was arrested on Friday, October 13, after Cumberland Police responded to a disturbance at a residence on the first block of Arch Street. The incident, reported at approximately 8:23 PM, allegedly involved a firearm.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with the alleged victim who claimed that Sean Smith pointed a rifle at her. A search of the residence led to the discovery and seizure of multiple firearms, one of which was reported as stolen. Smith was arrested and taken to police headquarters for further questioning.

While in custody, it was determined that Smith was prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition.


Additional information emerged regarding a potential explosive device in the residence, prompting the involvement of the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the State Bomb Squad. Upon inspection, it was confirmed that the device was not active. Ammunition was also discovered in the home.

Smith was later transported to Central Booking and is awaiting his initial court appearance. In a press release, the Cumberland Police Department outlined the charges: “Assault-1st Degree, Assault-2nd Degree, Reckless Endangerment, Firearm Use/Fel-Viol Crime, Illegal Poss Ammo, Rfl/Shotgun Poss-Disqual (x2), Theft: $100 to under $1500.”

Sean Allen Smith now faces a slew of charges, including first and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and multiple firearm-related violations. Further proceedings are pending as the case continues to unfold.
