Pile of money

A billboard advertisement for the Powerball jackpot led to an unexpected windfall for a 58-year-old Prince George’s County man. The winner, who works as a nurse, was inspired to purchase a lottery ticket while driving home from his shift with a co-worker on October 7. The decision to make a brief detour in Halethorpe for tickets led to a $50,000 win.

“It was actually my friend’s suggestion to stop,” said the winner. “She said, ‘wow, the jackpot is huge, we should try’.” Taking the cue, they pulled into the Royal Farms store in Baltimore County and each bought a few tickets.

The next day, while heading home from work, the pair decided to check their tickets. “When I scanned my ticket and it said $50,000, we were both so excited,” said the Capitol Heights resident, who matched four of the white balls and the red Powerball number, securing a third-tier prize.

After the initial excitement subsided, the lucky winner visited the Lottery Headquarters in Baltimore late last week to claim his prize.

As for what he plans to do with his winnings, the man’s intentions are twofold. Firstly, he aims to share a portion of the prize money with his co-worker, crediting her with the idea to purchase tickets. Secondly, he plans to assist his family and buy Christmas gifts. The fortunate ticket was bought at Royal Farms #046, located at 4308 Washington Boulevard in Halethorpe.
