Maryland Sees Powerball Millionaire, Seven $50K Wins in Week-Long Lottery Windfall

Jessica Woods

BALTIMORE, MD – Although the Powerball jackpot of $1.765 billion was clinched by a ticket sold in California, Maryland also had its share of winners in the past week. A player from Bowie became a millionaire thanks to the multi-state lottery game, and seven more players across the state each secured a $50,000 prize.

The $50,000 winners purchased their tickets in various locations including Abingdon, Berlin, Clarksburg, College Park, Edgewater, Hagerstown, and Owings Mills. According to lottery rules, matching the first five balls but not the Powerball results in a $1 million win, while matching four of the first five balls plus the Powerball nets a $50,000 prize.

In addition to Powerball, Maryland had a winner in its in-state only Multi-Match jackpot game. A player in Chesapeake City bagged a substantial $630,000. Overall, 35 Maryland Lottery tickets worth $10,000 or more were sold or redeemed during the week ending October 15, with total prizes exceeding $26.7 million.

Winners of prizes larger than $25,000 must claim their winnings at the Maryland Lottery Claims Center in Baltimore, which operates by appointment only. Prizes up to $5,000 can be claimed at any of the more than 400 Expanded Cashing Authority Program (XCAP) locations. Retailers across the state are authorized to redeem lottery tickets up to and including $600.
