Georgia Bureau of Investigation Probes Officer-Involved Shooting on I-95

CAMDEN CO., GA – A traffic stop turned fatal on Monday morning, as a Camden County deputy shot and killed Leonard Allan Cure, 53, during an altercation on Interstate 95 northbound near Harriets Bluff Road. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting an independent inquiry into the incident.

The encounter began around 7:30 a.m., when the deputy pulled over Cure’s vehicle. Initially compliant, Cure exited his car as directed. However, after learning he was under arrest, Cure resisted. The deputy deployed a Taser, yet Cure continued his non-compliance, leading to an assault on the officer. A second Taser deployment and use of a baton proved ineffective, compelling the deputy to discharge his firearm, according to the GBI.

Medical personnel attended to Cure at the scene, but he later succumbed to his injuries. The incident marks the 80th officer-involved shooting in 2023 that the GBI has been called upon to investigate.

As the probe is underway, details about the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting are still unfolding.
