Syracuse Police Issue Warning About Reports of Rabid Fox

Syracuse, NY — The Syracuse Police Department is urging residents to be cautious following multiple reports of an apparent rabid fox in certain areas of the city. The department has received several complaints about the animal being sighted in the vicinities of Burnet Avenue and Peat Street, Burnet Avenue and Hickock Avenue, and Burnet Avenue and Stafford Avenue.

According to the police, the fox has reportedly chased people and there has been at least one confirmed bite. Individuals who have come into physical contact with the fox, whether bitten or scratched, are strongly advised to contact Animal Control at (315) 442-5346.

Public awareness is crucial as rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system and can be fatal if not treated promptly. The police are urging people to share this information within the community.


As of now, efforts are being made to locate and capture the animal. Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution if they are in the mentioned areas.

UPDATE: The Fox has been taken and confirmed positve for rabies and anyone who contact with the animal should take immediate action by calling the Onondaga County Health Department at (315) 435-3236 and visit an Emergency Room for evaluation for rabies shots. Shots are at no cost for those who need them.
