New Jersey Cracks Down on Illegal Botox Spa Centers

TRENTON, NJ — Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and the Division of Consumer Affairs announced that Carolina Nunez, a licensed cosmetologist in Union County, has been ordered to pay $22,500 in civil penalties. Nunez was found to have performed invasive aesthetic treatments beyond the scope of her cosmetology license, constituting unauthorized medical practice.

“We are committed to enforcing New Jersey’s licensing laws to protect the public,” said Attorney General Platkin. Nunez allegedly offered and performed services like dermal filler injections, Botox injections, “vampire facials,” and the use of a hyaluronic pen in her now-closed Carolina Nunez Skincare salon. She was also cited for operating an unlicensed cosmetology shop, in violation of New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling regulations.

Nunez settled the charges against her with a Final Consent Order filed last week. She is required to cease performing medical treatments and any services beyond her skincare license, such as laser hair removal. The $22,500 penalty consists of a $20,000 fine from the State Board of Medical Examiners and a $2,500 fine from the Cosmetology Board.

The case is part of an ongoing crackdown on professionals allegedly exceeding their licenses to perform invasive procedures. Cari Fais, Acting Director of the Division of Consumer Affairs, emphasized the risks involved: “Those who perform medical procedures without the requisite licensure and qualifications pose a serious threat to public safety that will not be tolerated.”

This year, similar enforcement actions were taken against Marisol Cabrera and Isabella Dos Santos, both of whom faced penalties for allegedly performing medical procedures without the required licenses. These actions are a result of routine inspections by the Division’s Enforcement Bureau, designed to enforce state licensing laws and safeguard public health.
