Family Builds Huge Halloween Mosaic of Jack the Pumpkin King out of Pumpkins

Phil Stilton

The Nelson Family shattered previous records by constructing a pumpkin mosaic covering 193.35 meters, nearly the size of a standard tennis court, at Sunnyfields Farm on October 18. The artwork recreates an iconic scene from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Estimates suggest the mosaic consisted of around 10,000 pumpkins, easily surpassing the minimum requirement of 100 m² for a mosaic of its kind. A team of 10 people took five hours to complete the project. “Throwing the pumpkins to each other, you can’t afford to get distracted,” said the Nelson Family.

The farm owners chose to depict “Jack’s Lament,” a scene from the popular animated musical. Though social media fans suggested various themes, 20% recommended The Nightmare Before Christmas. “The top suggestion was the Lionesses, but it didn’t connect to Halloween,” the family stated.

The mosaic featured a blend of pumpkins and squash in different colors. “The orange and white are pumpkin, the green outline is Gem Rolet Squash, and the blue is Crown Prince squash,” they detailed.

After verification, Guinness World Records Adjudicator Jack Brockbank presented a certificate to Ian, Louise, and their son, Tom Nelson, confirming their achievement.

The mural is on display in Southampton, England.
