New Jersey Governor Vetoes Proposed Toll Increase on Major Highways

TRENTON, NJ — Governor Murphy has vetoed a proposed toll increase on the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway, eliciting praise from Senate President Nick Scutari and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin.

The veto blocks the Turnpike Authority’s recent decision to raise tolls, a move that had been under consideration in the state legislature. Both Scutari and Coughlin issued a joint statement lauding the Governor’s decision.

According to the statement, the Governor’s veto aligns with legislative efforts to make life more affordable for New Jersey families. These efforts include initiatives to cut property taxes and reduce the costs of prescription drugs.

The veto is considered a victory for New Jersey residents who use these major highways for their daily commutes, as well as for lawmakers aiming to alleviate the financial burden on citizens.

The veto also comes just weeks before an important state mid-term election cycle.
