YONKERS, NY — The Yonkers Police Department has revived its roadway safety initiative known as “Half the Wheels, All the Laws” in response to ongoing complaints from the community regarding unregistered or uninsured recreational vehicles.
The department has announced plans to impound unregistered or uninsured mopeds, scooters, dirtbikes, and other similar vehicles that are being operated illegally on public roads. Officers will issue multiple summonses to violators as part of the enforcement effort.
According to the police department, reckless operation of these vehicles remains the top community complaint and poses risks to residents, motorists, and pedestrians. Law enforcement will be actively patrolling in the weeks ahead to curb this behavior and encourage those skirting the law to register and insure their vehicles before the 2024 riding season.
The initiative also includes the dissemination of New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requirements concerning the registration, insurance, and safety equipment for these categories of vehicles. The department clarified that rideshare scooters like BIRD are exempt from DMV registration and insurance requirements when operated within their respective apps but must be used in accordance with the law.
Residents and riders are urged to comply with registration and insurance rules or risk having their vehicles impounded and facing legal repercussions.
