Education Issues Take Center Stage in Pennsylvania and New Jersey

TRENTON, NJ — Voters in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, and New Jersey will have education policy at the forefront of their decisions as they participate in today’s elections. In Pennsylvania, the focus is on education choice with the Lifeline Scholarships Program at stake, which aims to provide $5,000-$10,000 to economically disadvantaged students. The election of a new Supreme Court Justice and several school board members could significantly influence this initiative.

In Virginia, the issue of parents’ rights in education is key. Governor Glenn Youngkin’s support for parental involvement in educational decisions has been prominent. The election could see his party taking control of both legislative chambers, potentially leading to the introduction of Education Savings Accounts.

Kentucky’s gubernatorial race highlights concerns over safety and the current state of education. As Governor Andy Beshear seeks re-election, the dissatisfaction among parents with school district responsiveness may sway voters towards Attorney General Daniel Cameron, who advocates for improved educational choices.

New Jersey faces declining educational standards, with issues such as falling test scores, increasing absenteeism, and rising student behavior problems influencing school board and legislative elections. The outcome may favor candidates advocating for conservative approaches to parental rights and educational choice.

Jeanne Allen, Founder & CEO of the Center for Education Reform, commented on the significance of the elections, emphasizing the potential impact of parents’ voices against established special interest groups in the education sector.
