15-Year-Old Hospitalized in Newark School Shooting

NEWARK, NJ – A drive-by shooting outside Central High School in Newark left a 15-year-old student hospitalized on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred around 12:05 p.m., as reported by Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé.

Responding to the scene at the corner of 17th Avenue and Sayre Street, near a school entrance, officers found the injured student, who had been shot at least once. He was promptly taken to University Hospital and is in stable condition.

The shooting took place during a fire drill, and students were seen on video assisting the victim. Newark school spokesperson Nancy Deering confirmed the return of students to class following the incident.

Central High School, with over 830 students, is now the focus of an ongoing investigation led by local law enforcement.

Mayor Ras Baraka disclosed that the police have a vehicle description and are examining area surveillance footage as part of the investigation.
