NEWARK, NJ — The Port Authority and the South Jersey Transportation Authority have proposed budget plans for the upcoming year, which include potential toll increases. Drivers crossing the Hudson via Port Authority bridges or tunnels, as well as those traveling on the Atlantic City Expressway, might face higher costs if these proposals are approved.
The Port Authority, in particular, is considering a 63-cent increase in bridge and tunnel tolls and a 25-cent hike in airport AirTrain fares. These proposed changes are part of a budget nearly $1 billion higher than that of 2022.
Many state legislators on both sides have opposed this toll hike. Before the November election, Governor Phil Murphy urged against it. He has not commented on the matter since last Tuesday’s election.
Similarly, the South Jersey Transportation Authority is mulling a 3% toll increase. These proposed hikes are not yet definitive but are under serious consideration. The Port Authority officials have announced that a vote will occur during the Board of Commissioners meeting scheduled for December 14 to decide on these increases.
These potential hikes could significantly affect the daily commute of thousands of drivers, impacting their travel expenses. The decision, still pending approval, is closely monitored by commuters and residents relying on these transportation routes.
