QUEENS, NY – Kassun Brown, a 32-year-old resident of Springfield Gardens, pled guilty to second-degree manslaughter in an incident that claimed the life of an off-duty NYPD officer.

On January 17, 2020, around 11:58 p.m., surveillance footage captured Brown speeding through a stop sign at Nashville Boulevard and Lucas Street in St. Albans.

His 2006 Nissan Maxima collided with Ellis’ Nissan Altima, causing Ellis’ car to spin and hit two parked cars.

Ellis, a resident of St. Albans, sustained severe injuries including a traumatic brain injury and facial fractures. He succumbed to his injuries on February 27, his 35th birthday.

Brown, found with a blood alcohol content of .09 percent, exceeding the legal limit, and a dislocated right ankle, will face sentencing by Queens Supreme Court Justice Michael Aloise on January 11, 2024. The sentence is proposed to be an indeterminate term of six to 12 years in prison.
