Police Arrest Man Armed with Gun, Weed and Cocaine in Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – A tip from a citizen led to the arrest of 21-year-old Mykal Salaam-Derry by the Atlantic City Police Department. Detectives Eric Evans, James Barrett, and Troy Grams, part of the Special Investigations Section, apprehended Salaam-Derry at a convenience store located in the 600 block of New York Avenue at approximately 11:40 AM on November 24, 2023.

During the arrest, Salaam-Derry was found with a loaded handgun concealed in his waistband. A subsequent search revealed 28 bags of heroin, one gram of cocaine, and 23 grams of marijuana. Initially, Salaam-Derry attempted to mislead the detectives with a false identity, but his true identity was soon uncovered.

Salaam-Derry, a resident of Atlantic City, faces multiple charges including unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of hollow-point ammunition, possession of a large capacity magazine, and possession of a weapon while committing a controlled dangerous substance (CDS) offense. Additionally, he is charged with two counts of possession of CDS, three counts each of possession of CDS with intent to distribute, possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school zone, and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public zone, alongside obstruction of justice.
