Police Chase Ends in Gunfire

MARION COUNTY, FL – A vehicle pursuit that began in Citrus County ended in an officer-involved shooting in Marion County this evening, according to officials.

The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) deputies initiated a traffic stop on a Mitsubishi SUV in the Hernando area, with the driver suspected of having a felony warrant. The driver failed to comply, leading to a pursuit. Despite attempts to use a tire deflation device, the suspect continued into Marion County along Highway 200.Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies joined the pursuit and executed the Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT), causing the SUV to crash into a power pole. The situation escalated when the suspect, armed with a rifle, exited the vehicle. CCSO deputies, perceiving an immediate threat to both officers and citizens, discharged their firearms at the suspect.The suspect was injured and has been transported to a medical facility for treatment. Authorities have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public or surrounding communities.Colonel Elena Vitt commented on the incident, highlighting the danger posed by the suspect’s actions and the rapid response required by law enforcement. She emphasized the importance of collaboration between different law enforcement agencies in managing such critical situations.Residents are advised to avoid the area as investigations continue.
