Coastal Flooding Closes Roads Along the Bayfront in Ocean County

SEASIDE PARK, NJ — The Ocean County barrier island, stretching from Seaside Park to Bayhead, faced significant coastal flooding following this weekend’s passing storms and high tides. High tides pushed water over bulkheads, resulting in road flooding and impacting local communities. Several roads in Seaside Park were closed due to severe flooding Sunday into Monday morning.

The incident occurred as the region grappled with a storm passing during a high tide along the bayfront.

Water levels rose unexpectedly, surpassing the bulkheads designed to protect the shorelines.

Residential streets along the bayfront and lagoons experienced flooding, disrupting travel overnight.

Residents reported water swiftly encroaching into streets and properties, with some areas witnessing substantial inundation, particularly along the bulkheaded portion of Bayview Avenue.

On Monday, remnants of the flooding remained and roads along the bayfront remained closed to through traffic.

Although the tides have receded and the waters retreated, concerns remain high. Forecasters warn that coastal flooding continues to be a significant risk with each passing winter storm.

On Monday, the water level in lagoons along Route 35 South in Ortley Beach crested to the top of the bulkheads.
