Toms River North Wins Back-to-Back State Football Championship

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Toms River North secured a decisive victory over Passaic Tech with a final score of 23-13 in the NJSIAA Group Tournament’s final round, Group 5 Championship game on Monday. The game was played at SHI Stadium at Rutgers University.

Toms River North defended their 2022 championship title last night.

The night started with Toms River North taking the lead through Jeremiah Pruitt’s 10-yard pass from Micah Ford, followed by Yianni Papanikolas’ successful kick. Passaic Tech responded with Trashon Dye’s remarkable 76-yard run, leveling the score. The first half concluded with Toms River North leading 10-7, courtesy of Papanikolas’ 37-yard field goal.


The third quarter witnessed Toms River North strengthening their lead with Ford’s 1-yard run and another successful kick by Papanikolas. Passaic Tech attempted a comeback in the final quarter with Dye’s 6-yard run, but Toms River North sealed their victory with Anthony Rodriguez’s 43-yard interception return.

Key player stats highlighted the game’s intensity. Micah Ford of Toms River North led with 72 passing yards and 199 rushing yards, showcasing his all-around prowess. For Passaic Tech, Ma’Kao Taylor contributed 92 passing yards, while Trashon Dye led with 118 rushing yards and 14 total tackles.

The game was marked by strong defensive plays, with Toms River North’s Blaise Boland achieving two sacks and Jeremiah Pruitt making an interception. Passaic Tech’s Kaiden Rex recorded 1.5 sacks, and Jovan Tyrell also intercepted a pass.

Both teams exhibited championship level performances, but Toms River North’s strategic plays and effective execution ultimately earned them the Group 5 championship title.
