TRENTON, NJ – New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is not giving up his fight after suffering a defeat in his offshore wind energy battle. Today, the governor ordered the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, a handpicked board of Murphy allies to fast track the solicitation of new tenants for the state’s massive offshore wind farm leases.

Murphy today instructed the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) to expedite the state’s fourth offshore wind solicitation, set for early 2024. This directive aligns with New Jersey’s goal to transition to a 100% clean energy economy by 2035.

Governor Murphy emphasized the pivotal role of New Jersey in the offshore wind sector, highlighting the potential economic and environmental advantages. The state aims to remain a leader in offshore wind development, attracting new projects and sustaining employment opportunities.

“I have directed the BPU to take this action in recognition of the strong future of New Jersey’s offshore wind industry,” said Governor Murphy. “New Jersey can – and will – continue to remain a burgeoning offshore wind development hub that attracts new projects and their accompanying economic and environmental benefits for generations to come. These new projects, along with the Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind project awarded in 2021, will support tens of thousands of good-paying, family-sustaining jobs for New Jerseyans while protecting the quality of the air our children breathe and making good on the promise of affordable clean energy produced right here in the Garden State.”

The NJBPU’s upcoming solicitation is part of a broader strategy to combat climate change and promote renewable energy sources. This initiative will generate thousands of jobs and contribute to cleaner air and affordable energy solutions in New Jersey.

NJBPU President Christine Guhl-Sadovy reaffirmed the state’s dedication to achieving Governor Murphy’s clean energy targets, underscoring the importance of offshore wind in these efforts.

“Today’s announcement affirms New Jersey’s commitment to offshore wind and to meeting Governor Murphy’s clean energy goals,” said NJBPU President Christine Guhl-Sadovy. “Offshore wind is vital to our clean energy economy and our efforts to mitigate climate change, and we are resolute in our efforts to ensure New Jersey realizes its benefits.”
