Today is Santa’s List Day, When the North Pole Officially Opens for Letters

December 4th marks Santa’s List Day, a whimsical holiday celebrating the moment when Santa Claus compiles his famous list of naughty and nice children.

This day also serves as a fun reminder for kids to start working on their holiday wish lists.

The legend of Santa Claus dates back to 280 A.D. with the birth of St. Nicholas in what is now modern-day Turkey. Over the centuries, the story of St. Nicholas has evolved into the jolly figure of Santa Claus, complete with a home at the North Pole, elves crafting toys, a flying sleigh led by reindeer, and the tradition of delivering gifts by sliding down the chimney.

One of the key elements of the Santa Claus legend is his list of naughty and nice children. This concept gained popularity with the 1934 Christmas song, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” by J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie. The song encapsulates the idea that Santa is making a list and checking it twice to find out who’s been naughty or nice. The lyrics suggest that Santa sees all the actions of boys and girls, emphasizing the importance of good behavior.

The roots of this tradition can be traced back to 16th century Holland. Before the custom of hanging stockings, parents would place their children’s clogs near the fireplace. Well-behaved children would discover treats like candy or cookies in their clogs, while those who were naughty might find a lump of coal.

Although Santa’s list is said to be made on December 4th, it’s commonly believed that there’s still time for children on the naughty list to change their ways and make it onto the nice list.

To celebrate Santa’s List Day, people can engage in various activities such as:

  • Teaching children about the original Santa Claus, St. Nicholas.
  • Enjoying songs about Santa Claus like “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” “Here Comes Santa Claus,” “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” and “Santa Baby.”
  • Discussing the importance of good behavior throughout the year with children.
  • Assisting children in making their own Christmas wish lists.

Santa’s List Day is a delightful way to embrace the spirit of giving and kindness that defines the holiday season.
