MINNESOTA – A 44-year-old Minnesota man, Adam Garrett Roring, has been indicted by a grand jury in Hennepin County for the murder of his uncle, former city mayor 74-year-old Mark Novak, and the attempted murder of Novak’s wife. Roring faces charges including first-degree premeditated murder, attempted first-degree murder, second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.

The indictment comes after a brutal home invasion in which Novak was beaten and stabbed to death with a large chef knife and nunchucks. The assault also left Novak’s wife seriously injured. Prosecutors have filed for an upward departure in Roring’s sentencing, citing the invasion of the victims’ privacy, the particular cruelty of the attack, and the vulnerability of the victims due to their age.

The incident occurred in the early hours of August 24, when officers from the Bloomington Police Department responded to a call at a residence in the 1000 block of 105th Street W. in Bloomington. Upon arrival, they found Novak on the floor inside the home.

Roring was seen exiting the house through a window and was apprehended after a brief attempt to flee. He was found with blood on his clothing and in possession of a metal bar and a partial nunchuck, both allegedly bloodstained. Roring also had visible injuries and marks on his body.
