Suffolk Man Arrested for Damaging Parkland in Walter S. Commerdinger Jr. County Park

MASTIC, NY – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced the arrest of Terence Wolffe, 41, of Mastic, for criminal mischief and related charges. Wolffe is accused of causing significant damage to the wilderness of Walter S. Commerdinger Jr. County Park.

Tierney emphasized the importance of protecting the county’s natural resources. He praised the Park Rangers, especially the Targeted Response Unit, for their role in the investigation. Chief Park Ranger Steve Laton credited the rangers’ diligence for the apprehension.

Investigators report that Wolffe created a personal area in the park over time, using tools like machetes, axes, and shovels. He allegedly cut down trees, removed vegetation, and excavated soil, affecting an area of about 1,150 square feet. This activity not only harmed the flora but also altered the water flow from nearby wetlands, threatening the stability of remaining trees.

The environmental impact is estimated at $20,000, excluding costs for parkland restoration and labor. Wolffe’s actions were uncovered on December 5.

Following his arraignment on December 6 by Acting County Court Judge James McDonough, Wolffe faces charges of Second Degree Criminal Mischief, a Class D felony, and multiple environmental violations. He was released on his own recognizance and is due in court again on December 11.
