Montclair Mourns the Loss of Former Police Chief Thomas J. Russo

MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Montclair Police Department announced the passing of retired Police Chief Thomas J. Russo, a dedicated public servant who devoted 42 years to the Montclair Police Department.

Chief Russo’s distinguished career began in 1956 when he joined the United States Navy, serving in the Mediterranean on the USS Dash minesweeper. After being honorably discharged in 1958, he embarked on a law enforcement career with the Montclair Police Department in 1960. He rose through the ranks and was appointed as the chief of police in 1993, a position he held until his retirement in 2001.

Throughout his career, Chief Russo was recognized for his commitment to professional development. He was a graduate of the FBI’s National Academy and the Secret Service Dignitary Protection School in Washington, D.C. He also received a Certificate in Criminal Justice Education from the University of Virginia and completed the Certified Public Manager Course of the State of New Jersey. In 2005, he published his autobiography, “Street Kid to Top Cop.”


The Montclair Police Department and the community mourn the loss of Chief Russo and extend their thoughts and prayers to the Russo family during this difficult time. His legacy of service and leadership in law enforcement will be remembered and cherished by many.
