Rideshare Driver Assaulted, Car Stolen in Newark

NEWARK, NJ – Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé is seeking public assistance in locating a maroon 2020 Toyota Highlander, New Jersey license plate Z99MWW, carjacked last night.

The incident occurred around 10:20 p.m. when a male rideshare driver picked up two male suspects near Eckert Avenue and Osborne Terrace. Following a verbal altercation, the driver and suspects exited the vehicle on Bergen Street, where the victim was assaulted. One suspect drove away in the victim’s vehicle, heading north on Bergen Street, while the other suspect left on foot towards Clinton Avenue. The victim’s cell phone, debit cards, AirPod with case, and other personal items were inside the vehicle.

The suspects are described as Black males. The first suspect is about 5’10” tall, wearing a red jacket, blue jeans, and braids. The second suspect is roughly 5’8” tall, dressed in a yellow traffic vest, blue jeans, a dark hat, and long braids.


Detectives urge anyone with information about the vehicle or suspects to come forward. The public can view a photo representing the type of vehicle carjacked, although it’s not the actual car involved.
