ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – A collaborative investigation between the Atlantic City and Ventnor City Police Departments has culminated in the arrest of a man linked to extensive graffiti vandalism in the Downbeach area.

Steve Araujo, a 40-year-old Ventnor City resident, was apprehended by Officer Albert Herbert on December 4, 2023. The arrest followed a detailed investigation into numerous instances of graffiti found in Atlantic City and Ventnor City. Officer Herbert, along with assistance from Officer Howard Mason and Ventnor City Police Department Sergeant Kevin Brady, spearheaded the inquiry.

Reports of vandalism began surfacing in August, targeting various locations including art projects in Atlantic City’s Lower Chelsea neighborhood, electrical boxes, and local businesses. The graffiti spree continued through November, prompting intensified investigative efforts from both police departments.

Evidence gathered during a search of Araujo’s residence was pivotal in linking him to the crimes. Investigators uncovered a sketchbook with related artwork, 73 spray paint cans, 30 paint markers, around 75 spray nozzles, and 150 Sharpie markers, all of which were believed to have been used in the commission of the vandalism.

Araujo faces charges of criminal mischief, highlighting the seriousness with which local authorities are addressing property defacement and vandalism.
