Online Gambling Spikes In New Jersey Ahead of Holiday Season

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — New records in online gambling and sports betting revenue marked a significant shift in New Jersey’s gambling industry this November. The state’s casinos, along with their technology partners, garnered over $171.5 million from online table games and slots, reports the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement.

In the same period, casinos and three horse tracks handling sports bets registered $1.62 billion in wagers, setting another record. This performance underscores a transformation in gambling trends in New Jersey, historically dominated by physical casino betting.

Jane Bokunewicz, director of the Lloyd Levenson Institute at Stockton University, observes that these digital forms of betting contributed to approximately 45% of Atlantic City’s revenue in November. Bokunewicz suggests that online gaming and sports betting are not undermining traditional casinos but rather complementing them. She highlights the ongoing demand for the in-person gaming experience, despite a stabilization in revenues from physical casinos.

The long-term impact of this surge in digital gambling on the overall profitability of casinos remains unclear. These revenue streams, split with partners such as sports books and technology platforms, differ from the more direct earnings from in-person gamblers, which casinos traditionally rely on.
