LAVALLETTE, NJ – Today marks the founding day of Lavallette, a borough that was officially incorporated on December 21, 1887. Originating from portions of Dover Township, now known as Toms River Township, the establishment of Lavallette followed a referendum held on December 19, 1887.

Named in honor of Elie A. F. La Vallette, one of the United States Navy’s first rear admirals appointed by President Abraham Lincoln in July 1862, Lavallette bears a significant naval heritage. The borough’s co-founder, Albert T. Lavallette, was the son of the esteemed admiral, further embedding the town’s ties to maritime history.

In modern times, Lavallette has gained recognition for its quality of life. In 2008, New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked it as the 8th best place to live in New Jersey. This recognition highlights the borough’s continued appeal and significance in the state.

Lavallette was hit hard during Superstorm Sandy where entire blocks of homes vanished into the Atlantic Ocean and Bay. To this day, many have not been replaced. A new inlet was carved across the community in the wake of the storm. That inlet was quickly filled in and reinforced with a large steel sea wall.
