New Jersey Isn’t Good Enough For Phil Murphy to Spend the Holidays at Home

TRENTON, NJ – It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in New Jersey. The lights are hung and the shopping malls are buzzing. Traffic is gridlocked on most major highways and as he does most years, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is leaving New Jersey for a better destination.

That destination wasn’t disclosed, but Murphy has given Lt. Governor Tahesha Way an early Christmas present, the title of acting Governor of New Jersey until he and his family return on New Year’s Day.

Governor Phil Murphy and First Lady Tammy Murphy departed New Jersey on the morning of December 22 for personal travel. They are scheduled to return on the night of January 1, 2024. During their absence, Lieutenant Governor Tahesha Way will act as Governor.

Governor Murphy’s office confirmed the travel plans and clarified that the journey is for personal reasons. The nature of their travel was not disclosed.

This temporary transfer of power is in line with New Jersey’s constitutional provisions. Lieutenant Governor Way will assume all gubernatorial responsibilities until Governor Murphy’s return.

This is not the first time Lieutenant Governor Way has stepped into this role, demonstrating the seamless transition of power within the state’s executive branch.

Governor Murphy’s office has not provided further details on the trip or specific activities planned during their absence.
