Newtown Christmas Eve Standoff Ends Peacefully, Suspect in Custody

NEWTOWN, CT – A tense standoff in Newtown ended without further incident early Sunday, Dec. 25, following a shooting at a Boggs Hill Road residence.

Newtown Police responded to a dispute call around 7:50 p.m. on Dec. 24. Upon arrival, officers found the caller on the front porch with multiple gunshot wounds. The officers were able to move the victim to safety while the suspect retreated inside the house.

The injured individual was transported by Newtown Ambulance to Danbury Hospital and is now in stable condition, according to police reports.


Multiple agencies, including the Western Connecticut Regional Emergency Services Unit, were called to the scene as the suspect remained barricaded inside. After a standoff lasting several hours, the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Newtown resident Meghan Gouveia, surrendered peacefully shortly before 1 a.m. on Dec. 25.
