Toy Stores Could Face Fines for Not Having Gender-Neutral Section. Is New Jersey Next?

Robert Walker

TRENTON, NJ – When it comes to unpopular laws, New Jersey, under the leadership of Governor Phil Murphy, usually does what California does. We’ve seen it with COVID-19 restrictions, sanctuary state laws, and even the banning of gasoline-powered cars.

On New Year’s Day, California law will require toy stores to add gender-neutral toy departments. Those who don’t comply will be fined.

That leaves just one question. Is New Jersey next?

A new California law mandates large retailers to establish gender-neutral toy sections, effective Jan. 1. The legislation, signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2021, applies to stores with over 500 employees selling childcare items or toys. Non-compliance will result in a $500 fine.

The law targets products designed for children’s sleep, relaxation, feeding, sucking, or teething. Stores can maintain traditional boys and girls sections but must add a gender-neutral area for children 12 and under.

When it comes to government-mandated absurdity in California, New Jersey is usually not far behind.
