WEST TRENTON, NJ – As New Year’s Eve approaches, the New Jersey State Police are emphasizing the importance of responsible celebrations to ensure public safety. Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, highlighted the need for cautious decision-making during the festivities.
Reflecting on the previous year’s statistics, authorities noted that out of five fatal crashes during the holiday period in New Jersey, four were alcohol and/or drug-related. The State Police are advocating for zero fatalities this year and urge those consuming alcohol to avoid driving. They recommend using taxis, transportation apps like Uber and Lyft, designating a sober driver, or staying overnight at the celebration location.
To enhance road safety, the New Jersey State Police will deploy over 55 troopers for traffic duty statewide. These officers will focus on enforcing laws against speeding, aggressive driving, improper cell phone use, seatbelt violations, fatigued driving, and driving while intoxicated (DWI).
Colonel Callahan stated that the increased police presence aims to create a safer driving environment and reduce crash-related fatalities. He also extended a safe and happy New Year wish on behalf of the New Jersey State Police. The official holiday period is set from 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 29, to 5:59 a.m. on Tuesday, January 2.
