Severe Weather Leads to Travel Ban in Buffalo and Erie County

Adam Devine

BUFFALO, NY – The New York State Police have announced a travel ban for Erie County and the I-90, effective from 9 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2024, until 6 a.m. on Sunday, January 14, due to severe winter weather forecasted to impact Western New York. The ban may extend depending on Sunday’s storm conditions. A travel advisory remains in effect for the entire Western NY area.

The ban specifically restricts non-emergency personnel from using the roads. Violators in Erie County and the I-90 will be ticketed. Additionally, truck and tractor-trailer traffic is banned on the I-90 from Exit 46 in Rochester/Henrietta to the Pennsylvania border. The inclement weather has also prompted the rescheduling of the Buffalo Bills game to Monday, January 15, at 4:30 P.M.

Troopers will monitor major routes and work with local Emergency Operations Centers to ensure motorists’ safety. Motorists are advised to drive cautiously, considering snow accumulation, visibility, and road conditions. Essential driving tips include:

  • Checking the latest weather forecast.
  • Fully clearing windows and mirrors of snow and ice.
  • Maintaining a full tank of gas and sufficient fluid levels.
  • Using headlights at all times.
  • Decreasing speed in adverse conditions and avoiding cruise control.
  • Being aware of maintenance and emergency vehicles, giving them room to work.
  • Staying off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

Motorists are also encouraged to ensure their vehicles are equipped for winter travel, including emergency supplies like gloves, blankets, a tool kit, and a first-aid kit.

In case of a collision or roadway departure, drivers should stay in their vehicles and call 911, avoiding exiting the vehicle unless it’s an emergency. Awareness of location, direction, and mile post marker is crucial for quick emergency response.
