NEW YORK, NY — Trevor Thomas Bickford, a 20-year-old man radicalized by extremist beliefs, has pleaded guilty to attacking NYPD officers with a machete-style blade during New Year’s Eve celebrations in Times Square in 2022. The announcement came from federal prosecutors following Bickford’s admission in court on Thursday.

Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized the gravity of the attack, noting Bickford’s intention to commit jihad in New York City. He praised the bravery of the NYPD officers who were targeted while ensuring public safety during the iconic Times Square event.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams for the Southern District of New York condemned Bickford’s actions, which were driven by a distorted interpretation of Islamic teachings. He highlighted the threat posed to society by individuals carrying out acts of terrorism under the guise of such ideologies.

Bickford faces multiple counts of attempted murder for his assault on three NYPD officers. The guilty plea underscores the ongoing challenges of counterterrorism efforts and the importance of vigilance against extremist violence. This case also highlights the effectiveness of law enforcement in preventing larger-scale attacks and ensuring public safety during major events.
