SYRACUSE, NY – Syracuse Police Department’s K9 Chiro played a crucial role in recovering a loaded handgun following a pursuit on Monday, January 15.

At approximately 3:27 a.m., Officer Rajchel, along with K9 Chiro, responded to a call regarding a domestic incident involving a weapon in the 200 block of Niagara Street. Officers were given a suspect description, and Officer Rajchel soon spotted a man matching it on Oswego Street.

As Officer McGraw arrived and attempted to approach the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Hector Bonnet Matrille, he fled. After a brief chase, police apprehended Matrille. Although he was found with a magazine for a firearm, the gun was missing. K9 Chiro later discovered a Glock .40 handgun with an extended magazine in the backyard of a Gifford Street residence.

Matrille faces charges including Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Firearm.

The Syracuse Police Department commended Officer Rajchel and K9 Chiro for their efforts in locating the suspect and securing the firearm, contributing to the removal of another illegal weapon from Syracuse’s streets.
