NEWARK, N.J. – Andy Cook, a 24-year-old man from Newark, admitted to carjacking and conspiracy to use a firearm during a crime of violence, as announced by U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.

The indictment, to which Cook pleaded guilty before Judge Julien X. Neals, stems from an incident on December 6, 2021, in Montclair, New Jersey. Cook and an accomplice confronted a victim in her car, parked in her driveway. The accomplice brandished a firearm, demanding the victim exit her vehicle and leave her belongings. Cook then took control of the vehicle, driving away from the scene.

The charges against Cook carry severe penalties. The carjacking count is punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The conspiracy to use a firearm during a crime of violence holds a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Cook’s sentencing is scheduled for May 30, 2024.
