CAMBRIDGE, MD — The Cambridge Police Department reported a significant arrest following a traffic stop in the early hours of January 12. At approximately 12:15 a.m., officers conducting traffic enforcement on Greenwood Ave attempted to stop a vehicle for a stop sign violation at Park Lane and Greenwood Ave.

The vehicle’s operator abruptly pulled into a parking lot on the 600 block of Greenwood Ave and fled on foot, leaving the vehicle in drive. An officer secured the vehicle and discovered a passenger, who initially provided a false name. A loaded 9mm handgun, reported stolen from Federalsburg, MD in 2022, was found near the vehicle.

The passenger attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended by officers. He was identified as Wendell Allen Wongus III, 20, from Hurlock, MD. Wongus is prohibited from possessing a regulated firearm due to his age and prior convictions for Illegal Handgun Possession. The vehicle’s owner arrived on the scene and reported it stolen.

Wongus was taken to the Cambridge Police Department for processing. He was linked to the recovered handgun through further investigation. Following his initial court appearance, Wongus was transferred to the Dorchester County Department of Corrections.
