QUEENS, NY — Edgar Chalco, a 42-year-old resident of Jackson Heights, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the repeated assault of a young relative, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced today.
DA Katz highlighted the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the betrayal of trust and the impact on the young victim. She expressed hope that the sentencing would aid in the healing process for the victim.
Chalco, residing on 92nd Street, was found guilty last month of first-degree course sexual conduct against a child. Supreme Court Justice Karen Gopee handed down the 20-year sentence. Additionally, upon his release, Chalco will be required to register as a sex offender.
The charges and trial testimony revealed a prolonged period of abuse:
- From June 1, 2010, to January 2012, Chalco sexually assaulted the victim, then aged between 5 and 7 years old, on multiple occasions. The assaults, including oral sexual conduct, occurred in the victim’s home.
- The victim disclosed further abuse through 2017, when she was 12 years old, at Chalco’s residence.
The sentencing marks a significant conclusion to a case that underscores the importance of safeguarding children and prosecuting those who perpetrate such heinous crimes.
