Congressman Gottheimer Challenges Funding for Crisis Pregnancy Centers Amid Ideological Debate

Robert Walker

New Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer has taken a firm stance against federal funding for Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs), asserting that these centers mislead pregnant women seeking medical assistance. His comments came as President Biden and Vice President Harris commemorated the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade at separate events.

Gottheimer criticized CPCs for masquerading as health clinics, alleging that they deceive women facing critical reproductive choices. He emphasized that women visiting these centers often encounter individuals without medical backgrounds, who prioritize ideological agendas over medical advice, especially in situations of medical urgency.

The congressman’s remarks coincide with legislative discussions in Washington, D.C., where a bill is being considered that would permit states to allocate federal taxpayer funds through grants to CPCs. Gottheimer firmly opposes this use of federal dollars.

Meanwhile, volunteers at New Hope, a CPC in Westwood, contested Gottheimer’s claims in news interview this week.

They opened their doors to demonstrate the nature of their work, highlighting their mission to support first-time pregnant women. The center, run by volunteers, offers practical assistance such as donated clothing and car seats, while acknowledging their anti-abortion stance. However, they clarified that they do not provide medical advice, focusing solely on practical needs.

Gottheimer remains resolute in his effort to halt CPCs through his proposed Stop Anti-Abortion Disinformation Act. This initiative reflects the ongoing ideological divide in the nation regarding reproductive rights and the role of federal funding in supporting different viewpoints.
