PORT REPUBLIC, MD – The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal accident involving a pedestrian that occurred on the evening of January 19, 2024. Deputies responded to a report of a serious crash on southbound Solomons Island Road (Route 4) near Broomes Island Road in Port Republic around 8 p.m.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered an unresponsive pedestrian, Anthony Joseph Pessagno Jr., 36, of Lusby, on the roadway. The CCSO Crash Reconstruction Team was called to the scene for a detailed investigation.

The initial findings suggest that a 2020 Ford F350, driven by 68-year-old Martin Lynn Pitcher of Port Republic, was heading south on Route 4 when the pedestrian, who had been reported walking in and out of the road, was struck. Witness statements and calls to the Calvert Control Center corroborated that Mr. Pessagno was in the road and Mr. Pitcher did not see him before the collision.

Mr. Pessagno was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. The driver, Mr. Pitcher, did not require medical treatment and was released at the scene. The incident is still under further investigation by the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office.
