Passaic County Sheriff Takes Own Life Inside North Jersey Restaurant

NEW JERSEY – The law enforcement community in New Jersey is in mourning following the tragic loss of Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik. Sheriff Berdnik, a retired Clifton police officer who had been serving as county sheriff since 2011, died by suicide on Tuesday afternoon at a Turkish restaurant in Clifton.

Governor Phil Murphy has issued a statement expressing profound sadness over Berdnik’s passing. Describing him as a close friend and a devoted public servant, Governor Murphy highlighted Berdnik’s commitment to law enforcement and the trust he had earned from his constituents. Murphy and his wife Tammy expressed that they would deeply miss him.

Sheriff Berdnik’s death comes as a shock to the community he diligently served for over four decades.
