DAVENPORT, Iowa — George Harper, Jr., a 34-year-old resident of Rock Island, was sentenced to 67 months in federal prison on Tuesday for being a felon in possession of ammunition. The sentence follows Harper’s involvement in a shooting incident at a Kwik Star location in Davenport, Iowa.

Court documents revealed that during the shooting, which occurred at 1650 West Kimberly Road, Harper fired multiple rounds using a firearm he possessed illegally. His prior criminal record includes a conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm in Scott County, Iowa, which prohibited him from legally possessing ammunition.

Following the completion of his prison term, Harper will be subject to three years of supervised release. It is noteworthy that the federal system does not permit parole.

The announcement of Harper’s sentencing was made by United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa. The Davenport Police Department conducted the investigation leading to Harper’s conviction.

Harper’s case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN collaborates with law enforcement at all levels and community members to tackle violent crime issues in neighborhoods. The program, known for its effectiveness in curbing violent crime, is a key component of the Department of Justice’s efforts to reduce such offenses. PSN’s strategy includes targeting the most violent offenders for enforcement actions and engaging in community-based prevention and reentry programs to achieve sustainable crime reduction.
