ORLANDO, FL – Roman Batista, 38, of Kissimmee, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Carlos E. Mendoza for importing a substantial quantity of cocaine into the United States. The sentence follows Batista’s guilty plea on September 25, 2023.

The case unfolded on July 10th, when Batista arrived at Orlando International Airport from the Dominican Republic. During a routine luggage inspection, Customs and Border Protection Officers discovered 2,994 grams of cocaine concealed within a speaker in Batista’s baggage.

Miami/Tampa Director of Field Operations Carlos Martel commended the CBP officers for their vigilant efforts in intercepting the drugs, highlighting the agency’s commitment to disrupting the global illegal narcotics trade. He emphasized CBP’s round-the-clock dedication to preventing the entry of illicit drugs into the U.S.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Orlando Assistant Special Agent in Charge David Pezzutti underscored the significance of the sentencing, stating it demonstrates HSI’s resolve in combating the exploitation of the nation’s travel system for drug trafficking purposes. He also praised the strong partnership between HSI and CBP, particularly at the Orlando International Airport, in ensuring criminals face justice.

The investigation into this case was a collaborative effort between Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie A. McNeff led the prosecution.
