Maricopa County, AZ – In a disturbing turn of events, a man has been charged with the attempted abduction of an elementary school student in Maricopa County, Arizona. Joseph Ruiz, 37, was identified by police as the individual captured in a video engaging in this failed kidnapping attempt.

Ruiz faces charges of kidnapping and custodial interference, as reported by Phoenix-area news outlets KTVK/KPHO. The exact nature of his relationship to the child, if any, has not been disclosed by authorities.

The incident, which was recorded on video, occurred on a recent Friday morning at 7:56 a.m. The footage, obtained by the news outlet, shows a sedan performing a U-turn towards the child, who was walking to school on the sidewalk. The vehicle then stopped alongside the sidewalk, and as the student walked past, the driver emerged and began chasing the child on foot.

Fortunately, the student managed to run away, prompting the assailant to abruptly end the pursuit and return to his sedan.

Following the incident, administrators at Sunset Elementary School, where the student attends, sent a letter to parents detailing the ordeal. They informed that the girl had become aware of the suspect following her from her apartment, leading up to the attempted abduction. The quick response of the student in evading the suspect and the subsequent arrest highlight the seriousness of such incidents and the importance of vigilance in community safety.
