Jackson Police Unions Call for Public Safety Director to Bolster Department’s Success in Community

JACKSON, NJ – The Jackson Township PBA and SOA unions have requested the township council president today, calling for the creation of a public safety director to provide a link between the township government and the police department.

The union was clear in that they do not want to replace the position of Chief of Police, currently held by Chief Matthew Kunz, but to create a layer of civilian oversight within the department that existed several decades ago.

“The Jackson P.B.A. and the Jackson S.O.A. have always supported the position of Chief of Police. A strong Police Department with strong leadership is essential for the safety of the residents of Jackson,” the union’s statement read. “Currently, to ensure the continued success and strength of the Jackson Police Department, the Jackson P.B.A and the Jackson S.O.A support the creation of the position of Public Safety Director. Having a Public Safety Director will lead to an increase in the safety of our residents and increase the efficiency of our department and would be welcomed by the men and woman of our unions.”

The PBA represents rank-and-file patrol officers while the SOA is the union that represents administrative officers including sergeants, lieutenants, and captains.

The letter was signed by P.B.A. President Officer Jeff Henba and S.O.A. President Sergeant John Rodriguez.

Council President Jennifer Kuhn on Tuesday acknowledged she had received the letter from both union leaders.

“I have read the letter and will bring it forward to the council and we will decide how to proceed at our next council meeting,” Council President Kuhn said.
