Blackwood, NJ – Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center in Blackwood, New Jersey, is embracing a unique approach this Valentine’s Day to both address pet overpopulation and offer a cathartic experience for those with less-than-fond memories of past relationships. The shelter’s novel fundraiser, aptly titled “Neuter Your Ex,” allows individuals to name a feral cat after an ex-partner and then pay for its spaying or neutering.

Eric Schwartz, the director of development at Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center, shared that the idea emerged from a brainstorming session about fun, Valentine’s-themed fundraising activities. The concept quickly gained traction. “A group of us were in a meeting talking about some fun ways to raise money over Valentine’s Day. We were discussing a petagram. A board member mentioned that an idea had come through a volunteer about ‘neuter your ex,'” Schwartz explained.

The promotion, costing $50 per cat, not only offers a humorous take on Valentine’s Day but also serves an important purpose in controlling the pet population.
