Albemarle County, VA – The Albemarle County Police Department’s Traffic Unit conducted two major speed enforcement initiatives on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, targeting areas known for high traffic and crash rates. The operations were carried out on the 250 bypass near Fontaine Avenue and on U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) in the vicinity of Rio Mills Road.

Utilizing lidar technology for precise speed measurements, officers were positioned at strategic locations across these roadways. The enforcement efforts spanned three hours at each site.

A significant number of vehicles were found to be in violation of speed limits. Officers stopped a total of 123 vehicles for speeding, resulting in the issuance of 131 summonses. Notably, 17 of these vehicles were caught traveling more than 20 miles per hour over the posted speed limit.

These traffic enforcement actions serve a purpose beyond issuing tickets. The Albemarle County Police Department emphasizes the educational aspect of these stops, using them as an opportunity to engage with drivers and communicate the importance of adhering to traffic laws.
