ATLANTIC COUNTY, NJ – The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, in collaboration with the Atlantic City Police Department and the Atlantic County Special Services School District, has developed a new training program for law enforcement officers.

The Recognition and Response Training program is designed to enhance interactions with community members who have special needs or mental health issues, focusing notably on Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The program equips officers with tools and strategies for recognizing signs of disabilities and responding effectively and safely. Training sessions include a law enforcement representative and a Special Educator.

Lieutenant Frank Timek of the Atlantic City Police Department highlighted that the training aligns with state guidelines on de-escalation without force, enhancing educational awareness about disabilities.

Erin Lichtenwalner, Director of Instruction, Programs & Services at the Atlantic County Special Services School District, noted the growing and changing needs in communities.
