Staten Island Man Charged After Fatal Pedestrian Collision

New York, NY – A 64-year-old Staten Island resident, Mohammad Malik, has been arrested and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian following a tragic incident that occurred on Thursday, October 26, 2023. The collision took place at the intersection of Riverside Boulevard and West 70th Street within the 20 Precinct.

According to police reports, Malik was driving a 2019 Cadillac Escalade southbound on Riverside Boulevard when he struck an 89-year-old male, Leonard Sugin, and an 87-year-old female as they were crossing the boulevard westbound at West 70th Street. Both victims were promptly attended to by emergency services and transported to New York Presbyterian Weil Medical Center in stable condition.

Despite initial hopes for recovery, Leonard Sugin, a resident of 201 West 70th Street, New York, NY, succumbed to his injuries nearly a month later, on Thursday, November 23, 2023, and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Malik, residing at 333 Bertram Avenue in Staten Island, NY, remained at the scene following the accident.
