TOMS RIVER, NJ — In a landmark case stemming from the extensive “Operation Checkmate” investigation, Mark Capichana, 56, of Keyport, has been sentenced to a total of fourteen years in New Jersey State Prison. Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced the sentencing, which took place on February 2, 2024, by the Honorable Dina M. Vicari, J.S.C., marking a significant milestone in the fight against drug trafficking in the region.

Capichana faced charges related to his involvement in a high-level cocaine distribution network, pleading guilty to Conspiracy to Possess Cocaine in an Amount Greater than Five Ounces with Intent to Distribute, and to Financial Facilitation of Criminal Activity. The sentences for these charges, each set at seven years by Judge Vicari, will run consecutively, reflecting the severity of Capichana’s crimes.

The charges and subsequent sentencing are the culmination of “Operation Checkmate,” a four-month-long cooperative investigation that began in July 2021 and concluded in October of the same year. This multi-jurisdictional effort involved the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Strike Force, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration – High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) Group 5, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Strike Force, and the New Jersey State Police – Trafficking Central Unit, among others.

“Operation Checkmate” targeted three cocaine distribution networks across Ocean, Monmouth, and Middlesex Counties, as well as New York City, responsible for importing more than three kilograms of cocaine per week into these areas. Through the use of sophisticated surveillance and undercover operations, the task force succeeded in disrupting these networks, culminating in the arrest of 24 individuals and the execution of 24 search warrants. The operation resulted in the seizure of more than four kilograms of cocaine, over 15 pounds of marijuana, more than $650,000 in cash, seven firearms, ten vehicles, and additional illegal narcotics.

On October 26, 2021, as part of the sweeping arrests, detectives executed search warrants at Capichana’s residence and his business in Keyport, leading to the seizure of approximately 1,455 grams of cocaine and $166,000 in cash. Capichana’s sentencing sends a strong message about the consequences of engaging in drug trafficking and financial crimes related to narcotics distribution. The success of “Operation Checkmate” highlights the collaborative effort and dedication of multiple law enforcement agencies to eradicate the flow of illegal drugs into New Jersey communities.
